Nonlinear visual coding from an intrinsic-geometry perspective

Abstract:
Early and middle level visual coding can be explained in terms of intrinsic
geometric properties of the visual input. We show how the Riemann tensor
represents speed and direction of motion, and how integrated tensor components
predict some global motion percepts. We also relate the results to properties
of MT neurons.
